Software tool to monitor quality of education

HUBLI: Even while the Union government is contemplating a monitoring mechanism for schoolteachers and students, the Bagalkot ZP has developed a software tool that enables online monitoring of quality of education.

The application is available on the site http://stg2.kar.nic.in/bgksslc/. It was designed by National Informatics Centre. The project was conceived and funded by the ZP.

The interactive site contains scores of each of the 24,000 SSLC students in the district. It has their final exam scores in IX Std and the scores of two of their terminal and three of their preparatory exams of SSLC. Students are categorized according to the percentage of marks they obtained in these exams. The school-wise, taluk-wise, and subject-wise information is expected to come handy while assessing the trend.

The system works like this - all information about performance of students in schools, government and private, is available online. Parents can track the progress of their students on the site. Students, teachers, NGOs and government officials can access this information anytime. Headmasters and education department officials can point out which group of students is falling behind in which subjects and direct the teachers concerned to focus on them.

"We have held additional classes for over 5,000 students in 336 schools for nearly six months now. Results are encouraging," ZP CEO G C Prakash said. "Last year, we tried a similar system of complementary tutoring the students without using a website. This led to good results and the district moved up on the list of performance in SSLC exams. We hope to do better this year as we have an organized data base that enables web-based monitoring," Prakash said.

NIC officers say such solutions could be adopted by other districts too. "We have provided information in Kannada and English. Entering the data is easy. Other districts wanting to use it will have to just make changes in the number of taluks, subjects and students," district informatics officer Y Giriyachar said.

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa will formally launch the website in a school in Bilagi in Bagalkot district on Saturday.

Gowda and Gore

I chose this title because I wanted to sound strange and confusing. Yesterday over lunch, I got to know former US vice president Al Gore won the Peace Noble for his environmental campaigns. I was busy and could not think much about it. I had heard about Al Gore’s film on snow animals. The only other thing I could recall about him was the way he introduced himself to students in a US university. ``I am Al Gore. I used to be the next President of the US’’. For me, that smelt of Narcissism. But when I went home yesterday night, I began watching TV to get details. I hopped between channels that were speaking to Al Gore and the one that was speaking about former Indian Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. Then it struck me. How a former vice president of a resourceful country can smoothly go out of politics in that country and how some one like Gowda could remain an undying irritant in Indian politics. Avarana – An Introduction

The author Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhairappa is a Kannada writer. He is the author of the popular and much discussed book Avarana. He retired after teaching at the Mysore based Regional Institute of Education, Sardar Patel University and NCERT, New Delhi. He was born in a poor Brahmin family in Santeshivara village in Hassan district on July 26, 1934. Now he lives in Mysore. He is married and has two sons. In college, he majored in Philosophy. He was awarded a Doctor of Philosphy (PhD) from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda for his thesis Satya Mattu Soundarya (Truth and Beauty). The novel Avarana The Mysore University's dictionary gives the meaning of Avarana as cover, environment, ambience and surroundings.
